Government Awareness Campaign Concludes with UN Day for Persons with Disabilities Celebrations

The UN Day for Persons with a Disability, on December 3, highlighted newly trained athlete leaders as they made their public speaking debut at the Bulgarian Museum of Sports. Over three days (December 1-3, 2013), Special Olympics athlete leaders, mentors, parents and staff from Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia and Romania took part in an ALPs University Workshop. Over a period of three days, 50 rehearsal and official speeches were delivered. The international group spoke four different languages, therefore a lot of focus was placed on body language, tone and non verbal communication. The seminar, which was funded through a grant from the Christmas Record Trust, was tailored to train athletes and their peers in playing an active part in the Government Awareness Program in Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia. The GAP initiative aims at supporting program leaders across the region in an effort to educate, inform and engage political and media leaders to support the organization.
