For two consecutive days in December, nine Special Olympics Middle East-North Africa programs joined an Athlete Leadership Program workshop The Special Olympics programs in Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Jordan, Tunisia, the Kingdom of Saudi Araiba, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Oman. Special Olympics Oman was the hosting program with 30 participants. The focus on the first day, 22 December, was on team-building and skills development, and Day 2's focus was on public speaking skills development. Through out the two-day workshop, interactive exercises were offered to reveal the best there is in our athletes. Two speakers were invited to discuss leadership and healthy nutrition. Athletes explained that their main concerns are to be financially independent, to excel in sports, to improve self confidence and to take part in international events. Participants were appreciative of the sharing of best practices and interaction with each other and the presenters. They would have preferred an extended period to benefit more from the overall sessions. Back home similar workshops will be planned. Chaperones will develop athletes public speaking skills and organize train the trainers sessions. Things to follow..
