Why I am Taking a Stand For Intellectual Disability

By Lynn Aylward

Her Excellency Joyce Banda, President of the Republic of Malawi, explained in February 10's Huffington Post why she convened the African Leaders Forum on Disability yesterday in Malawi. President Banda, who co-hosted the Forum with Special Olympics, said she is committed to changing the shocking reality that the world’s approximately 1 billion people with disabilities, and among them, the 200 million people with intellectual disabilities, often face toweringly high barriers in accessing health care, food and nutrition, education, employment, transport and, central to all of these, barriers to inclusion in their communities and human rights.
