My Journey to Become an Open Water Swimmer

My name is Edel Armstrong and I started swimming at the age of 5 at Coolmine Sports Complex. I joined Phoenix Flyers club in 2006. Since joining I have taken part in many competitions and I was recently selected to compete in a Regional Competition in March 2017. This year my coach Liz asked if I would like to take part in Open Water Swimming. To do this you have to do Safety Courses 1 and 2. I did two safety classes in Belvedere College pool in June, then I did a week’s training in Wicklow Harbour. It was very cold in the water and I had to wear a wetsuit as I was extremely cold. I really enjoyed the week as did my other team mates. We all passed the course and on the last day we all went to my favourite restaurant, the Happy Pear. Then I did a competition in Wicklow Harbour, it was 450 metres. It is a lot different competing in the sea, it is much harder and the water is quite rough, but I just did my best and came 4th. I really enjoyed my experience as an Open Water Swimmer.
