On 31st May, Special Olympics Romania athletes were welcomed by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in the gardens of the Cotroceni Palace to celebrate together the International Children's Day, observed worldwide on 1st June.

75 children with and without intellectual disabilities from schools and NGOs in Bucharest and Târgoviște, together with professors and volunteers from the National University of Physical Education and Sports in Bucharest played sports under the theme "Every child can be champion". The athletes received medals from President Iohannis and Mr. Mihai Covaliu, Chairman of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee.

The event was aimed at promoting an inclusive society, one that accepts and values the potential and abilities of children with disabilities, as active members of the communities in which they live.
