European Week of Sport kicked off with the Baltic Law Enforcement Torch Run in Lithuania. Special Olympics Lithuania athletes and police officers from Latvia, Estonia, Poland, and Ukraine participated in the run and all together covered 2.3 km distance on the famous pedestrian road Laisves Aleja (Alley of Freedom) and the old town in Kaunas city where they brought the Flame of Hope. The LETR team also joined the 55 athletes from the participating countries for the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics 7 a-side football tournament “Friendship Cup”. Police officer Ervins Zihmanis who participated in the LETR Baltic Run with Special Olympics Latvia athletes said “this was my first time participating in a Torch Run but I can definitely say it won’t be the last. The event motivated me to replicate the same in Latvia. There has already been some conversation about Special Olympics cooperation with the police in Latvia but now I believe we can lit the “Flame of Hope” in Lviv very soon.”
