Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Department: Constituent Services and Support

Position Summary: This position is responsible for all communications pertaining to the Healthy Athletes and Research departments, which includes identifying and assessing functional departmental needs and overseeing and managing all internal and external communications opportunities. This position reports formally to the head of the Healthy Athletes and Research Departments (Senior Vice President for Constituent Services and Support), but has a vital role in collaborating with the Special Olympics Communications department. This position is funded through a Cooperative Agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.


Responsibilities:
  • Manage all constituent communications efforts; constituents include Healthy Athletes volunteers, health professionals, universities, governments, sponsors and supporters, partners, and other organizations.
  • Create, or manage creation of, internal and external communications materials for the Healthy Athletes and Research departments, including brochures, videos, fact sheets, training manuals, signage, press kits, conference proceedings, web content, and newsletters, including the quarterly Healthy Athletes Update newsletter. Serve as liaison between staff, designers, contractors, vendors, and consultants, and manage budgets and financial and legal agreements throughout the process.
  • Develop and implement communications tools for disseminating research and health data to key constituents, including analyzing and translating research findings for application by Special Olympics Programs around the world.
  • Collect and provide data, stories, and information from the Research and Healthy Athletes departments to support overall Special Olympics marketing and communications efforts.
  • Identify and manage Healthy Athletes and Research press announcements, news opportunities, and special events (including press conferences). Work with Regional Offices around the world to create localized and targeted pitches.
  • Manage Healthy Athletes and Research spokespersons; create talking points, speeches, and facilitate media training.
  • Keep Healthy Athletes and Research staff abreast of current news and research.
  • Serve as editor/proofreader on key internal and external documents, including reports to funding organizations and symposia proceedings.
  • Participate in annual strategic planning and budget process to ensure that communications efforts support departmental goals and are planned and budgeted for.
  • Submit Healthy Athletes and Research materials, programs, and leaders for awards, and maintain an award archive.
  • Support expansion of Special Olympics Provider Directory through postings in newsletters, trade publications, and Websites.

Qualifications:

  • BA or BS degree required, Master's preferred, in public health, journalism, English, communications, public relations, or a related area
  • 7-10 years of experience desired, with an emphasis on health or research communications.
  • Some research or research communications experience strongly desired.

Department: Constituent Services and Support
Reports to:  Senior VP, Constituent Services and Support

Overview: This position is responsible for positioning SOI as a powerful source for political and social change around the globe through government relations leadership and actions. Responsibilities include: developing a strategic governmental relations program for SOI and with each SOI Region; leading the SOI government relations team; establishing relationships with top officials in national governments and intergovernmental organizations; creating effective governmental relations and policy collaborations with other private, corporate and academic organizations; identifying funding opportunities and securing government resources to support the SOI movement.


Responsibilities::
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for SOI Government Relations in conjunction with Headquarters and Regional senior staff
  • Position Special Olympics as a viable force for driving sport, health, education, and economic development through advancing policies advantageous to SOI and securing significant governmental funding streams
  • Direct efforts of SOI internal and external governmental liaisons and work collaboratively with SO Programs to help support their government relations activities

Position Summary:The Senior Development Writer will be responsible for crafting the “voice” of Special Olympics in all aspects of its development efforts: soliciting, reporting on and stewarding grants and other funding from individuals, foundations and corporations. Working with the CEO, the CDO, Development, and Program staff, the candidate's work will include researching and writing grant proposals, highly customized stewardship reports, presidential acknowledgement letters, as well as high level, thematically-focused materials. Candidate must be able to transform complex program information into clear, coherent and compelling statements for a variety of audiences. Candidate will also provide editorial support and strategic input. The candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively.

The position requires a skilled, experienced and versatile writer. The individual must have previous professional experience in grant writing or development communications. This is an exempt position and manages no staff.


Primary Responsibilities::
  • Write, edit and produce highly customized proposals, reports and letters targeted toward individual and foundation perspective donors.
  • Write and edit articles for external and internal publications, brochures, case statements, concept papers, letters, special acknowledgements and other materials as needed.
  • Work closely with the president, chairman, senior management, the major gifts team and field program staff to ensure proper writing support for SOI development's major gifts function.
  • Write and oversee the mailing of all documents related to major donor funding, including special appeals, letters of thanks, and timely stewardship reports.

Reports to:  Senior Vice President, Donor Development

Position Description:The position is responsible for establishing and advancing Special Olympics' short and long term web-based fundraising strategies by ensuring the development and implementation of organization-wide plans for service delivery, relationship management and fundraising, as well as database development to support these initiatives. This position requires close coordination with members of the Development and Communications Departments to ensure that messaging and donor cultivation is integrated. The position works with IT department to ensure appropriate infrastructure is in place to support online relationship management and web-based donor development activities. The position interfaces with Regional staff to identify and share best practices among SO Programs.


Responsibilities::
  • Leads inter-departmental online fundraising activities of Special Olympics, assuring the cooperative planning, priority setting and appropriate information sharing of staff and departments involved in Internet programs.
  • Assists in developing/enhancing electronic fundraising guidelines, procedures and requirements for new Internet-related systems across SOI and Programs.
  • Assures integration of online strategies and tactics with offline marketing/fundraising and stewardship
  • Assesses web-based giving sites and evaluates opportunities for participation by Special Olympics.

Department: Information Technology - with professional oversight from Special Olympics University
Reports to:  Director, IT Applications

Position Description: Manages and supports the software and databases that are implemented in the Special Olympics health systems. The health systems include: Healthy Athletes Software, Provider Directory, SHIP, Medfest, Medical Encounters Software and the Athlete Personal Health Record project.


Responsibilities::

  • Supervise and enter data in the Healthy Athletes Software (HAS)
  • HAS event setup, report generation and distribution, helpdesk
  • Assist in developing training modules for SO Program staff and HA volunteer clinical directors in recording, data entry and reporting
  • Manage communication for change management with HA Global Clinical Directors

Reporting to the Sr. VP of Constituent Services and Support, the VP of Health Programs will lead the SO Healthy Athletes initiative (HA) which includes Special Smiles, Opening Eyes, Healthy Hearing, Funfitness, Fit Feet, Health Promotion, and MedFest. These free health screening programs take place mostly in conjunction with SO sporting events. During 2007, 642 events were held globally and provided 150,000 health screenings through 13,000 volunteer health professionals and students. Recently, SO initiated global development activities through partnerships with NGOs, governments and corporations. Under their leadership, the VP will be responsible for 35 staff and consultants and manage a program valued at approximately $20 million (cash and VIK). Major funders include the US Government (CDC) and Lions Clubs International.


Responsibilities::

  • Lead and manage a global health program (HA) for persons with ID;
  • Supervise headquarters staff, consultants -guide regional HA staff; Programs;
  • Oversee contracts, cooperative agreements and grants;
  • Serve on the SOI Human Subjects Protection Committee (IRB);
  • Seek cash and VIK resources from corps, prof. groups, foundations, gov;
  • Provide quality assurance for SO health programs and initiatives;

Responsibilities::

  • Lead implementation of a large scale, new National Youth Activation project (NYAP) with the US Special Olympics sub-region (52 Programs) and Regional Office).
  • Help to hire and then supervise staff selected to support the NYAP.
  • Oversee and manage a national grant program in support of NYAP.
  • Coordinate efforts by several SOI departments and the SO I North America Regional Office in support of the NYAP.
  • Establish and oversee an Advisory Committee for NYAP activities, including the grant program, and a Youth Advisory Committee; develop committee(s) structure, guidelines and operating principles.
  • Oversee a staff management committee within SOI (Hdqts. and Region) for key deliverables under the Department of Education grant.
  • Establish a National Youth Activation Congress and support its initial convening at the 2009 World Special Olympics Games.
  • Establish and maintain a surveillance system for all deliverables under the Department of Education grant that supports the NYAP.
  • Lead and implement the evaluation of the NYAP in an ongoing way and at the conclusion of the grant.

    Reports to:  Chief Legal Officer

    Position Summary:: This position is crucial to the biennial accreditation of over 210 Special Olympics Programs around the world, Program compliance with the Special Olympics General Rules, and the maintenance of the General Rules. The position incumbent will draft, review and negotiate a wide range of contracts, will work with local counsel to register regional offices/staff in compliance with local laws, will provide employment law support to Human Resources, and will oversee immigration and visa matters.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Manage accreditation of over 100 Special Olympics Programs each year, working directly with Special Olympics regional offices and Programs.
    • Work closely with Finance Department and regional offices to assure timely billing and payment of Program accreditation fees and support an international Special Olympics task force to reform global accreditation fee formula.
    • Manage completion of ongoing Special Olympics General Rules revision process, develop General Rules training materials for use by regions and Programs, and provide training for regional staff.
    • Oversee Program compliance with General Rules and manage resolution of compliance violations up to and including de-accreditation of Programs in serious violation of General Rules.
    • Manage U.S and international registration of Special Olympics offices, including legal evaluation of specific locations as sites for Special Olympics offices.
    • Assist Chief Legal Officer and Associate General Counsel re interpretation and application of General Rules, contracts and other legal matters.

    Reports to:  Senior Director of Finance

    Primary duties include accounting, reporting analysis and compliance for one of several grants in a growing portfolio of Federal Grants.  Federal donors include the Department of Education, Department of State, Department of Health and Human Services, Center for Disease Control and United States Agency for International Development.  Key responsibilities include Grants Accounting & Administration and Sub-grant compliance.

    • Responsible for data integrity and accuracy for the grant
    • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual grant revenue and spending reports including SF269, SF272 and other necessary reports in support of government and other donor requirements as necessary
    • Primary point of contact with sub-grantees on financial matters related to the grant
    • Meets regularly with program staff/sub-grantees to resolve financial and budgeting issues concerning their programs/sub-grants

    Manager, Media and Public Relations

    Department: Communications
    Reports to:  Director, Marketing and Public Relations

    Responsibilities:

    • Assist in development and implementation of annual media relations plan and ongoing media relations efforts of SOI
    • Develop story ideas and pitch to targeted audiences
    • Generate media coverage for print, broadcast and online media outlets about SOI activities with key top-tier international and national media
    • Support media relations efforts where appropriate of PR personnel in Regional offices
    • Steward relations with key public relations and communications firms supporting SOI
    • Manage, develop and maintain on-going individual media contacts across the U.S. and internationally
    • Act as liaison with members of the World Games Organizing Committees on media-related matters and assist in SOI media efforts at World Games
    • Establish and maintain favorable relations with the major foreign print, wire services and electronic media that are based in the U.S.
    • Develop working association with NGO PR contacts worldwide
    • Coordinate with other departments to ensure media coverage of SOI activities

    • Draft, prepare and distribute media releases, media kits, magazine articles and op-eds

    • Prepare speeches and other presentation materials as requested

    Qualifications:

    • College degree in communications related field
    • 3-5 years experience in day-to-day media relations and/or as a journalist

    Sr. Manager of Sports Partnerships

    Reports to:  Sr. Director of Sports, North America
    Department: North America Sports

    Position Summary:

    Responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing all aspects of World Games preparation/competition/evaluation and delegations services for Special Olympics North America (SONA). This position also assists with sports development and competition management for Regional and National competitions. Senior Manager of Sports Partnerships duties shall include:

    Essential Functions

    • Manage and oversee assigned aspects of Team USA — may include logistics, information dissemination, quota system, selection of Head’s of Delegation, in-kind fund development (transportation, uniforming, equipment, etc.), committee structure, communications and media, medical, security, risk management, training and long term operational plans
    • Create and maintain communication with all SONA Programs regarding World Games — updates in information, areas of need and overlap in resources, coordinate all questions and concerns, and provide assistance as needed
    • Oversee World Games athlete quota request and distribution process for SONA.
    • Oversee World Games selection criteria to ensure compliance with General Rules.
    • Serve as liaison to Games Organizing Committees as well as Special Olympics Inc. departments for all World Games related issues for SONA
    • Manage all related meetings, conferences, events and trainings linked to SONAs participation in World Games
    • Oversee the development and implementation of the SONA Soccer Development Project.
    • Develop infrastructures, partnerships and implement strategies that promote and grow assigned sports.
    • Assist in providing technical and event management resources for USA National Games and all SONA competitions above the Program level
    • Develop and oversee annual operating budget(s)
    • Develop and oversee all related partnerships and relationships
    • Provide support and resources to all Programs within the region

    Prerequisites for Success

    • BA or BS College Degree
    • 5 + Experience in the intellectual disability community and/or Special Olympics experience is a plus.
    • 8+ years experience in event planning (International Sporting Events preferred) with expertise in fund raising and sponsorship

    Position Summary: The Director of Corporate Partnerships will report to the Vice President of Corporate Partnerships and is responsible for fundraising from corporate foundations and sports associations to support Special Olympics.

    Primary Responsibilities:
    The Director of Corporate Partnerships will initiate and develop revenue-generating relationships with corporations, corporate foundations and associations whose interests intersect with Special Olympics' programming areas, and is responsible for program fundraising and stewardship.

    • Report to Vice President, Corporate Partnerships
    • Overall: Responsible for helping to secure new and/or upsell existing global and multi-national partnerships
      • Identify/track sponsorship prospects and existing relationships for upselling
      • Conduct research internally (e.g., track size and scope of current US Programs and/or regional relationships that have potential to expand nationally, internationally or globally
      • Prepare sales or renewal presentations for the strongest top-tier prospects
      • Provide support for as well as participate in collaborative sales sessions with prospective top-tier partners and/or their agencies
      • Provide sales support to regions and U.S. Programs with partnerships that have the potential to grow country-wide, region-wide or internationally. Sales support includes targeted research, tailored

    Description:

    The Vice President of Major Gifts is responsible for the planning, implementation, and management of the Special Olympics major giving program.  This position requires close coordination with the Office of the President, Office of the Chairman, senior Special Olympics headquarters staff, Board of Directors, and other national, regional and Program staff and volunteers in the identification and solicitation of Special Olympics' major individual and foundation prospects.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    S/he works closely with Corporate Partnerships, Communications, World Games, regional fundraising teams, and Development staff across the movement and especially with the Chief Development Officer to ensure the organization’s private fundraising needs are met.  This person also looks for the link between private and public revenue and leverage opportunities and works with Finance to forecast revenue for planning, on budgeting, and to track progress toward goals.  S/he will supervise a team of between two and four individuals.

    This position requires a high level of competency in verbal and written communications; familiarity with and understanding of the U.S. foundation community; and a sense for the type of individual who may have an affinity to the mission.  S/he must have a comfort with working with high net worth individuals.

    Qualifications Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and eight years experience in major gift fundraising in a nonprofit environment
    • Successful experience in asking for and closing gifts or sales and building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors or clients
    • Successful experience in managing multiple projects and developing strategies
    • Knowledge of fundraising principles and practices
    • Ability to interact successfully with people at all levels of wealth, business and industry, as well as with colleagues representing a variety of points of view
    • Supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance
    • Ability to work with a communications team to produce case materials and brochures that support a major gifts fundraising effort or campaign
