Khristenko Ludmila Grigorievna, 45, and daughter Eugenia, 17, became involved in Special Olympics Kazakhstan in 1998 when Eugenia joined the Special Olympics bowling club in Almaty. While Eugenia trained, her mother helped the coach, eventually replacing him.
In November 2000, Grigorievna was selected as the Director of the Almaty branch of Special Olympics Kazakhstan. Today, the local Program has 700 Special Olympics athletes who compete in 20 Special Olympics sports clubs.
Grigorievna said she receives a lot of support from husband Vasilyi, 46, an educator, and daughter Ekaterina, 20, a student, who also are Special Olympic volunteers.
