Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Thaalaba Hassan
Special Olympics Morocco

Thaalaba Hassan and participants in Special Olympics Morocco

Thaalaba Hassan (left in photograph) started his journey with people with intellectual disabilities even before Special Olympics Morocco was established, and has since been a key volunteer for the Program.

Thaalaba Hassan started his journey with people with intellectual disabilities 24 years ago, even before Special Olympics Morocco was established. “In 1989 I learned about the Special Olympics program while I was in France. I became obsessed with the idea of serving people with mental retardation,” Hassan explained.

When Special Olympics Morocco was established in 1994, Hassan immediately joined and began to recruit and train coaches for Special Olympics. He was a member of the Games Organizing Committee for the 2nd Special Olympics Middle East/North Africa Games held in Rabat in 2000.

Energetic and enthusiastic, Hassan has helped the Program develop the sports of football (soccer), athletics, equestrian and table tennis.
