Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Cathy Lachenmyer receiving her Coach of the Year award

Cathy Lachenmyer receiving her coach of the year award during the ceremony prior to a San Francisco Giants baseball game.

As head coach of the Tri-City Roadrunners of Alameda County in Northern California, USA, Cathy Lachenmyer teaches athletes that having fun and trying their best are more valuable than winning. She also believes that athletes should respect their opponents as much as their teammates.

Beyond her coaching duties, Lachenmyer recruits coaches and athletes and organizes practices for more than six teams a year, ensuring that Special Olympics continues to thrive in the Tri-City area.

Lachenmyer received the "Jiffy Lube Coach of the Year" award in the Special Olympics category and was honored at a San Francisco Giants pre-game ceremony, where she took part in throwing the “collective” first pitch with other award-winning coaches.
