Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Henry Proctor

Special Olympics Singapore football coach Henry Proctor in action.

A Special Olympics football (soccer) coach, Henry Proctor began volunteering with the Association for Persons with Special Needs-Chao Yang Special School in 1989.

When the athletes graduated to Tanglin Special School, he saw the need for continuous skills development for people with special needs and offered his services to the school. The athletes regard him as a mentor even after they graduate.

He was head coach for the Program’s football team when it participated in the first Asia Pacific Games in Shanghai, China, in 1996, and chaired the Soccer Organizing Committee for two consecutive National Games in 1997 and 2001. In 2002, he was the advisor and the head referee during the Program’s first Unified Sports® Soccer Tournament.
