Special Olympics New Zealand's Michael Conder was born 23 August 1964. He is married and lives independently with his wife Janine in Tauranga, New Zealand.
Conder is an avid competitor in golf; his best score to date is 90 for 18 holes on his Par 67, 9-hole home course Otumetai. He hopes to — and is well on the way — to improving that personal best.
He cites competing at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games and the National Games in Auckland 2001 as his career highlights. His ambition was to have a handicap of 25–30 prior to the World Games and he hoped to win a medal in the 18-hole stroke play in Ireland. He achieved his goal by winning bronze in his division. His medal-winning performance is all the more remarkable when it's known that just nine days before the start of the World Games, Conder dislocated his shoulder in a swimming pool. At the New Zealand National Games he partnered Charlie Dempsey, New Zealand’s representative on the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
In the long term Conder hopes to have a handicap under 20. He is intent on making golf a lifetime sport.
