Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Oscar Mejia, Special Olympics Guatemala
Oscar Mejia, 39, is funny, friendly, hardworking and very responsible. He is one of 10 sons. Over the years, Mejia, who trains and competes in athletics and football (soccer) has amassed what he describes as "the biggest pride of all his life:" 43 medals (30 gold, seven silver and six bronze), and has attended several Special Olympics World Games. His personality and public speaking skills helped him become a Global Messenger and a member of the Board of Directors of Special Olympics Guatemala. Mejia participated in the Athlete Congress in Puerto Rico and the Athlete Leadership Seminar in Peru. In his spare time, he coaches a basketball team composed of 12-year-olds in his community.
