Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Silvia Scherrer enjoys roller skating

Silvia Scherrer enjoys roller skating on the grounds of her home, the Stiftung Bad Heustrich.
Just two years after picking up the sport, roller-skating dominated Silvia Scherrer's life. Her talent and hard work in practice paid off quickly, offering Scherrer her first airplane flight from Switzerland to the United States for the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

At home in Emdtal, a small town near Bern, Scherrer lives in the Stiftung Bad Heustrich, an institution for residents with mental retardation. There she took part in a training program to prepare her for a job as a kitchen aide.

The director of the institution, M. Eugen Walther, also is her skating coach. Together, they train once a week on the grounds of the facility.

Thanks to roller skating, she has found new friends in a local youth group and meets with them often to go skating together.

Scherrer also enjoys music and says her favorite singer is Celine Dion.
