Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Participants receive Healthy Athletes screenings during the Regional Games.
Participants in the Middle East/North Africa Regional Games received free health care screenings, including vision screenings, at the Healthy Athletes venues.

Emirates Health Minister H.E Dr.Hamed Mohamed Al Ketamy and Special Olympics Middle East/North Africa Managing Director Eng. Ayman Abdel-Wahab opened the Healthy Athletes® screenings which took place during the 2006 Special Olympics Middle East/North Africa Regional Games. Volunteer doctors from the Emirates and participating countries conducted health screenings of athletes who competed in the Games, a free service offered at many Special Olympics competitions around the world.

Minister Al Ketamy spoke about the importance of offering all individuals appropriate health care, whether they have a disability or not, within the framework of the Emirates health care development project. Dr Kholoud Al Seweidy, head of the Special Olympics Emirates medical committee, said that the Program plans to include Healthy Athletes in its activities.
