Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Sheikh Mohamed Ben Rashed Receives Special Olympics Chairman

On 11 November, HH Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashed, United Emirates Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai warmly received and welcomed both Timothy Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics, Inc., and Eng. Ayman Abdel-Wahab, Regional Managing Director of Special Olympics Middle East/North Africa. Sheikh Rashed attentively listened to Shriver as he briefed him on the history of the Special Olympics movement and the role it plays in changing the lives of millions of people with intellectual disabilities around the world. Shriver also praised the efforts of the Emirates and all those involved in making the 5th Middle East/North Africa Regional Games such a success. He thanked HH Sheikh Mohamed for holding the Games under his patronage and offering the organizers all the facilities required to put on a spectacular event.

Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashed revealed that he was pleased that the Games were held in the Emirates. He explained that it was very important to get involved in the movement, coach and support the athletes, and help them become more active participants in their communities. “This is what we aim for and instruct officials to follow,” he said.
