Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Regional Athlete Leadership Programs Workshop

Participants of the Regional Athlete Leadership Programs Workshop
Nine athletes participated in the 4th Regional Athlete Leadership Programs Workshop.

From 12-14 November, nine athletes and their chaperones representing Jordan, Iran, Egypt, Morocco and Mauritania met in Dubai at the Leadership Qualification Centre for the 4th Regional Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) Workshop held during the 2006 Special Olympics Middle East/North Africa Regional Games.

Special Olympics Vice President Dave Lenox led a training session on the “Athlete Experience Evaluation,” a process designed to allow the athletes to measure and evaluate many variables related to the Games. The program's objectives were to strengthen ALPs and train more athlete leaders (Special Olympics is an athlete-led movement). Topics from the Global Athlete Congress in Panama in June 2005 were also discussed in order to provide additional recommendations from the Middle East/North Africa region. Governance training was covered during the last two days.
