Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Regional Family Forum

From 12-14 November, 17 family members from Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Syria, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Morocco met in Dubai at the Leadership Qualification Centre for the 2nd Regional Family Forum, held during the 2006 Special Olympics Middle East/North Africa Regional Games. The objectives of the forum were to share best practices and motivational tips to use with children and adults with intellectual disabilities; learn how to build a family support network; share the challenges parents sometimes face with their children with intellectual disabilities; and to provide parents with the opportunity to convey their recommendations and possible development tools to the Special Olympics Middle East/North Africa team.

Dr. Saad from Tunisia did a presentation on “healthy living of our athletes” and Abu Machaal, a parent from Kuwait, shared his long journey with his son, Machaal, who is a certified scuba-diver. All attendees expressed their real desire to start or activate family networks so that siblings of individuals with intellectual disability could benefit from a forum where they can freely express their concerns and expectations as siblings of a Special Olympics athlete.
