Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

From the carrying of the "Flame of Hope," to the training and participation of the athletes, to the medal ceremonies, IPTV and its broadcast partners will give viewers an inside look at this ground-breaking event.

IPTV coverage will result from collaborating with several states' public television stations: Wisconsin Public Television will profile a member of Team Wisconsin, a softball team made up of 15 to 62-year-olds. South Dakota Public Television will cover a 20-year-old swimmer whose father and brother coach the team. Along with several stories on Iowa competitors, Iowa Public Television producers will also tell the story of the Cessna airlift, 400 business jets and pilots who will fly over 2000 athletes and their coaches to the games.

In the spirit of Special Olympics, IPTV's coverage will inform viewers of the value of the games, both to the participants and to society in general.
