* Cricket and Kayaking are not official Special Olympics sports — they fall in the category of "recognized sports," as does Netball, for which rules are in the process of being formulated and approved.
These are the Special Olympics Summer Sports Rules. These Sports Rules provide the standards for Special Olympics competitions that will be held locally, nationally and worldwide.
The Official Special Olympics Summer Sports Rules is the result of recommendations and the practical experiences of thousands of coaches, volunteers, Special Olympics athletes and their families worldwide. Attention has been given to modifications in the sports rules to insure for the widest range of abilities to give each athlete a reasonable chance to win.
These Sports Rules provide the necessary steps for Games organizers to follow to insure that each athlete is placed in the appropriate ability group. It also provides the guidelines for coaches to follow in preparing their athletes for competition.
The Special Olympics Sports Rules Advisory Committee is proud to share the Official Special Olympics Summer Sports Rules with you and wishes to commend your commitment to providing our Special Olympics athletes with the best opportunity to train and compete.
