Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Eligibility of Delegates

We will bring together 30-50 Special Olympics family members and the current Global Family Leaders for the entire 2007 World Games. Delegates will represent every region in the Special Olympics movement.

Title: Special Olympics Regional Family Leader

Purpose: To promote, educate and inform families, Programs and the community about the mission, philosophy and benefits of Special Olympics through family activation and support.

Qualifications:

  • Family member of a Special Olympics athlete;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and philosophy of Special Olympics;
  • Active Special Olympics involvement;
  • Knowledge of public speaking;
  • Availability to travel to Shanghai, China, in October 2007;
  • Enthusiasm for Special Olympics; and
  • Comfort speaking English.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China (2-11 October 2007);
  • Work closely with Program leadership and staff to support the development of Family Activation and Support projects in your Special Olympics region;
  • Support development of a local Program Family Support Network in concert with your Program leadership, supporting the goals of leadership development and growth of athlete and family participation;
  • Attend scheduled speeches, presentations and appearances; and
  • Represent Special Olympics in a professional manner.

Beyond the World Games, these family members will serve Special Olympics as members of the “Global Family Advisory Council” for approximately two years until the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games. Council members may serve the movement by presenting at conferences/workshops, focus groups, e-mail communications, conference calls, progress reports, writing stories for online newsletters, Web site ideas, etc. Program leadership and regional Special Olympics staff should plan to utilize regional and Global Family Leaders to enhance and enrich Special Olympics programming.

Notes: Employees of Special Olympics are not eligible. “Special Olympics family member” refers to a husband, wife, partner of an athlete, relative of the athlete (mother, father, child, sister, brother, grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc.), or an individual who serves as the athlete’s legal guardian, foster parent or caregiver.

Guidelines for Selection of 2007 International Family Leadership & Support Summit Delegates

  • Applicants must be a family member of a currently registered Special Olympics athlete (see above for definition).
  • Family member submits application materials by 30 March 2007 deadline.
  • Family member demonstrates active involvement with Special Olympics.
  • Willingness to go through basic orientation about Special Olympics.
  • Family member can commit to being involved with Special Olympics at the local, Program, or regional level for two years following the 2007 International Family Leadership & Support Summit.
  • Willingness to go through basic orientation about Special Olympics and family involvement.
  • Family member must not be a coach, volunteer, Unified Sports® partner or other official delegation member involved in the 2007 World Summer Games.
  • Family member demonstrates enthusiastic desire to support and to empower family members to improve Special Olympics.
