Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Call for Family Delegates to the 2007 Special Olympics International Family Leadership & Support Summit

Family members are a key support group for Special Olympics athletes in competition at all levels.

Families are the most powerful and valuable natural resource available to Special Olympics. Families serve Special Olympics by reaching out to new athletes, coaching, transporting, raising funds, officiating, chaperoning and training other volunteers. Family members also make energetic and enthusiastic goodwill ambassadors because they know first-hand the benefits and joys of being part of Special Olympics. Therefore, the International Family Leadership & Support Summit seeks to recognize, honor, support and empower family members of athletes. Special Olympics believes that families must be engaged in the decision making-processes as the movement grows to more than 3 million athletes by 2010. As a result of your training and participation, you will become committed to spreading the Special Olympics message.
