For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Global Law Enforcement Torch Run-Seoul, Korea

Excitement was high as the Special Olympics Flame of Hope™ made its way to Seoul, Korea, on 17 August on its journey around the world leading up to the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai. The Flame arrived in its miner's lamp at the Gate of Peace, Olympic Park at nine o'clock in the morning, where it was welcomed by several representatives from Special Olympics, the Chinese government and global partner DHL. Two athletes, one from Korea and one from China, joined in lighting the torch from the Flame to begin the Global Law Enforcement Torch Run.

A stream of yellow flowed through the city as law enforcement officers from Korea and China joined the athletes, all dressed in DHL uniforms, on the run to Jamsil Sports Complex.

The torch made its next stop at the Chinese Embassy, where it was met by a second group of runners. Athletes and law enforcement officers held the Flame high as they made their way to the final stop of the morning, City Hall Plaza.

Traditional Korean dancers entertained guests as they waited in anticipation for the torch to arrive, and cheerleaders dressed in colorful costumes rallied the crowd in shouts of welcome. The Flame then made its appearance in a grand procession, greeted by Korean and Chinese dignitaries and representatives from Special Olympics and DHL, and everyone shared in the excitement as the cauldron was lit and the Flame continued to shine.

The Flame traveled on to Tokyo, Japan, where another welcoming part of the world celebrated its arrival on 22 August.
