Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Stacey Johnston Special Olympics Washington (USA)
 
Stacey Johnston, Special Olympics WashingtonStacey Johnston, of Spokane, Washington, USA, is a true Special Olympics leader. She was one of the first International Global Messengers and currently serves on the International Board of Directors of Special Olympics. She also serves on the World Games Site Selection Committee, as well as the Public Education Committee.
 
She has traveled throughout the world representing Special Olympics, meeting with world leaders and government officials. An athlete for many years, she currently competes in golf and has been named as a member of Team USA for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.
 
As a Special Olympics athlete for more than 20 years, Johnston has competed in aquatics, speed skating, basketball, track and field, football (soccer), team handball, cycling, softball, cross country skiing, long distance running, volleyball and roller skating.
 
Johnston says that Special Olympics has helped her to do great things and learn about life. She says it helps her with physical fitness, social skills, and helps give her the confidence to make a living at the Down River golf course in Spokane, Washington, which has in turn allowed her to own her own home.
 
As part of her duties on the Special Olympics Board, she helps to set the direction and vision of Special Olympics. In 2000, she traveled to Asia to help start Special Olympics China, and to help bring the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games to Shanghai.
