Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Athlete Leadership Programs provide insights and new opportunities

by Chan Wai King

My son, Ng Jia Jun, was selected to participate in the Special Olympics Athlete Leadership Programs training in Jakarta, Indonesia, in October 2002. The Principal of his center called me and suggested that it would be a good opportunity for him. What struck me was that the program's aim was training athletes in leadership skills. I thought it would be both interesting and beneficial for him.

Jia Jun was very excited about his trip and I could sense that he was proud of being selected. His sisters have been very successful both in academics and in their careers, and it was common for them to go on overseas trips, but never for him. His ego was really boosted as he planned for his trip and packed his bag without being reminded. I remember that his eyes sparkled wherever we talked about his trip. It really brought him tremendous amount of happiness.

The Athlete Leadership Programs training in Jarkarta was a real eye-opener and I applaud the effort put into planning it. I totally support the mission of Special Olympics. It provides the basic support to families who have a member who has a mental handicap. The athletes have a chance to win and share their achievements with their families. Special Olympics also provides opportunities for athletes to explore participation in various roles and basic training in team building, listening skills, presentation and planning. The program in Jakarta was conducted in a lively, enjoyable manner. All the athletes were respected and challenged to participate in all activities. The trainers and facilitators were able to capture the interests of all participants, difficult topics were simplified without omitting any of the essence or objectives.

I am grateful to Special Olympics for presenting different aspects of skills. I am very encouraged and am helping prepare my son to give a presentation in his school to let both teachers and other students understand the mission of Special Olympics and to help recruit more people to join the organization.
