Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Starting a Family Support Network

Thanks to the support of Kim Samuel Johnson and the Samuel Family Foundation, Special Olympics is able to offer grants to support the development of Family Support Networks and Family Support Network events.

An informal family discussion group springs up at a Special Olympics event

Family Support can be found through formal and informal events; contact your local Program to find out how to start a Family Support Network.

To receive a Family Support Network Grant, you should first contact your state/provincial or national Special Olympics Program by visiting the Special Olympics Program Locator. The Program will then work with you and Special Olympics regional staff to complete and submit a Family Support Network Grant Application to Special Olympics headquarters in Washington, DC (USA).

The grants range from US$2,000 to US$4,000 on average for one year. Typically, seed grants to start a Special Olympics Family Support Network are US$2,000 and the larger grants are for events such as a National Family Forum or similar event.
