HAS Frequently Asked Questions
Why have the forms changed?
Special Olympics Healthy Athletes has grown tremendously — for example, increasing from approximately 100 screenings in 2002 to more than 300 in 2004. With this kind of growth, we have had to update our data management process. The Healthy Athletes Software system (HAS) brings together, in one global database, screening results for all Healthy Athletes disciplines that will bring great value to users at multiple levels.
What do I write in the TOP PART of the form?
1. HAS ID Number — DISREGARD — It is generated by the HAS system. 2. Event — If the screening is in conjunction with a Special Olympics sporting event (i.e.: 2004 State Games) write that. If it is solely a screening, list the name of the event. 3. Location — WHERE is the Event taking place? City/State. 4. Sport — What sport does the Athlete play? 5. Delegation — refers to Regional and World Games only. 6. Region — Will be filled in automatically.
Do I have to write my name on the form?
YES, you must put your name on the forms! Yes, we will no longer be using numbers to identify screeners. We will be tracking clinicians by their names.
My Program is conducted solely by volunteers — data entry will be a burden.
The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Program is conducted solely by volunteers all over the world. The Athletes and families greatly appreciate your time and dedication to helping them! As far as the data entry required for the new HAS data collection site, perhaps there is a secretary, assistant, or computer-friendly person that is not a practitioner and would be interested in volunteering. There is also some opportunity to hire a data entry person through the Healthy Athletes Grant process, if necessary. Please contact your local Special Olympics Program for more details.
What happened to the PDA version?
I saw it at the 2003 World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland. The PDA version was tested at the World Summer Games in Dublin. It was also tested in Wisconsin, U.S.A., December 2003. Unfortunately, it is not yet ready for distribution to Programs.
How do I find out the web address for the data entry?
There are several ways to get the web address for the HAS and your particular event. First, a decision will need to be made as to who will have oversight of the data (for review). Coordination between the Special Olympics Program leaders and the Clinical Directors will help resolve data entry issues. The Local Clinical Director or Special Olympics Program coordinator for the event will need to contact the Healthy Athletes Coordinator for their region. The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Managers (in Washington, DC) will also be able to help. Lastly, you can e-mail mwisor@specialolympics.org for the HAS information you need.
What do I do with the forms once they are entered?
The forms are the property of the Special Olympics Program. Ideally, they should be kept for at least one year (for backup to compare year to year screenings of the Athletes).
