Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Meet the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Staff

Jessica Beauchemin
Senior Manager of Health and Research Communications
She has been with Special Olympics for a year. Jessica's role is to build awareness about the Healthy Athletes program and other Special Olympics University endeavors through the creation of brochures, videos and fact sheets, event coordination and media outreach, as well as working with Sandy Block to produce Healthy Athletes Update.

Renee Dease
Outreach Coordinator for Healthy Athletes
She has been with the organization since 1978. Renee's responsibility includes, but is not limited to, assisting with the department's constituents.

    Senior Manager for Health Promotion and MedFest
    Heather has been with Special Olympics since August 2007. She is responsible for Health Promotion daily operations, content development and program management, as well as overseeing the Health Promotion Capacity and Community-Based Grants, along with operations for MedFest.

    Kester Edwards
    Athlete Coordinator for Healthy Athletes and Sports
    He has been with Special Olympics for seven years. Kester's role is to work with managers on materials and to help run Healthy Athletes events. He also supports programs with in the Sports Department around Athlete Leadership Programs, athletes and coaches.

    David Evangelista
    Director of Program Development and Analysis
    David has been with Special Olympics for more than eight years. David has been focusing on building Special Olympics in developing countries through partnership building with entities such as UNICEF, Plan International and others while also managing further Healthy Athletes expansion. He remains manager of Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes.

    Lisa Hicks
    Senior Grants and Finance Manager
    Lisa has been with Special Olympics for eight years. She manages the budget and finances for Healthy Athletes.

    Darcie Mersereau
    Senior Manager for Research and Evaluation
    Darcie has been with Special Olympics for two and a half years. She helps set the research agenda, design and oversee research projects, administers Health Professions student grants, and directs the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Fellowship program.

    Kathleen Palermo
    Grants Coordinator for Healthy Athletes
    Kathleen has been with Special Olympics for one and a half years. She coordinates Healthy Athletes grant applications by reviewing applications, maintaining the grants database and monitoring final grant reporting.

    Shantae Polk
    Manager of Special Smiles and FUNfitness
    Shantae is responsible for the managing Special Smiles and FUNfitness, providing resource, logistical and operational support to Clinical Directors running events in their local areas, and assisting Global Clinical Advisors in developing relationships with sponsors, volunteers and allied healthcare professionals.

    Windiarini (Rini) Redgers
    Administrative Assistant for Healthy Athletes
    Rini joined Special Olympics in February 2007. She is the contact for staff, volunteer and consultant travel coordination and expense reimbursements, along with maintaining a centralized filing system, master calendars and logistical support for meetings, conferences and vendors.

    Martin Wisor
    Manager of Regional Growth, Healthy Athletes North America
    Martin has been with Special Olympics for three years. He provides support to all Special Olympics North America Programs for all Healthy Athletes events and manages Healthy Athletes Software (HAS).
