Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

More than 100 worldwide leaders from Special Olympics staff, Global Clinical Advisors, International Global Messengers and volunteers assembled on 7-9 December in Miami for the 2007 Global Health Conference. Attendees represented all seven Special Olympics regions and all seven Healthy Athletes disciplines. The group gathered to share personal anecdotes, best practices, lessons and models, and to learn from colleagues working on the Healthy Athletes program over the last 10 years. Most importantly, the insights garnered from this conference will be rolled into a five-year strategic plan specifically for the global health program.

Dr. Mark L. Wagner, Vice President of Health Services; Cristian Ispas, National Director, Special Olympics Romania; International Global Messengers Dustin Plunkett (USA) and Andrew Williams (Australia); Troy Greisen, Regional Managing Director for Asia Pacific; and Folashade Bolumole, Program National Director for Special Olympics Nigeria, all delivered inspiring speeches throughout the conference.
