Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

  • Nearly 19,000 free health screenings were provided to athletes from 159 of 164 delegations at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games. This is the largest number of athletes screened at a Healthy Athletes venue since the Program’s inception in 1997.
  • More than 800 volunteers helped out at Healthy Athletes over nine days.
  • Approximately 4,900 Special Olympics athletes, or 69 percent of athletes participating in the World Games, were screened at the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Village.
  • Special Olympics athletes who went to Healthy Athletes received an average of 3.8 screenings.
  • Over the course of the screenings, 110 hearing aids were provided, and more than 20 percent of those athletes who went through vision screenings received prescription eyewear.
