Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Two Healthy Athletes Founders Receive Special Olympics “Special Spirit of China Award of Excellence”

In a star-studded event at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center during the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in October, Special Olympics honored Drs. Paul Berman and Steven Perlman along with 11 other extraordinary individuals including Nelson Mandela, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nadia Comanici, Yao Ming, and the city of Shanghai for the “special” contributions they have made and continue to make to promote and raise awareness of the understanding and acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities, and the Special Olympics movement around the world.

“Paul and Steve's dedication and leadership to Special Olympics and the Healthy Athletes Program have provided invaluable health services for one of the most underserved and marginalized populations in the world—individuals with intellectual disabilities,” said Dr. Stephen B. Corbin, Senior Vice President of Constituent Services at Special Olympics. “They have been instrumental in the growth and success of the Healthy Athletes Program which is essential to the health and well-being of Special Olympics athletes.”

Berman and Perlman each were awarded the Special Spirit in China Award of Excellence for their commitment to the Special Olympics movement for more than 10 years and since the inception of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® Program—Dr. Berman as a founder and Global Clinical Advisor for Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes®  and Dr. Perlman as a founder and Global Clinical Advisor for Special Smiles®, two Healthy Athletes disciplines providing free health screenings to Special Olympics athletes worldwide.
