Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Editor's Note

As 2007 draws to a close, I would like to reflect on a major stage in the growth of the Healthy Athletesฎ Program. Special Olympics staff, global clinical advisors and clinical directors, representing all of the regions, came together in Miami, Florida, in early December 2007. The goal of this conference was to reflect on how Healthy Athletes has grown in the past 10 years and to brainstorm and strategize where the Healthy Athletes Program can and should go in the future. You will read more about the meeting in this newsletter, along with a goodbye from Dr. Mark Wagner, as he retires from his position as Vice President of Health Services. We hope you enjoy hearing about some of the great things and good people that make the Healthy Athletes Program what it is today. Please remember that we want to share what you are doing; let us know if you have an exciting story.

Thank you for all of your contributions, including time, energy and professional skills.
