Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Connecting Resources to Curricula

Q: What are the content subject areas where the lessons align?
A: Generally lessons fall under language arts, civics, service-learning, history, social studies, health and physical education. You will be able to determine the best fit for your circumstances after previewing the Guidelines and reading through the four lessons.

Q: How much time will each lesson take to teach?
A: The lessons are designed to last approximately 45 minutes, or one class period.  Using  the videos, books and other supplemental materials will take extra time, but work well  into the lessons.

Q: How long do the service-learning or community service activities take?
A: You will find an array of in-class projects lasting from as short as one class period to more involved service projects that take place out of class or after school, such as Unified SportsŪ, Partner Clubs or Youth Summits lasting several weeks or a semester.

Getting the Resources

Q: How do I get the lessons from this Web site?
A: Register online first and this will give you access to the download section where you  will find the complete array of K-12 resources in HTML, Microsoft Word or PDF formats.

Q: Instead of downloading all the files, can I just get a CD-ROM or a hardcopy of the materials?
A: When you register, just check the box where you request a CD-ROM copy. Those  resources will be mailed to you by a Special Olympics representative in your area.

Q: How can I get the videos, books and other resources mentioned?
A: These will be mailed to you by the local Special Olympics representative upon  completion of the online registration.  Videos will be combined as a DVD with the CD-ROM lessons.

Q: Can I get more than one kit for my school?
A: Kits are divided by four grade and age groups: K-2 (5-7 years), 3-5 (8-10 years) , 6-8 (11-13 years) and 9-12 (14-18 years).  Generally we can provide one kit per grouping for each school. Sharing of materials via placement in a teacher resource room or library is encouraged.

Q: If I need to receive more information about Special Olympics or would like to arrange for an athlete spokesperson to visit our class or school, who do I contact?
A: Information about Special Olympics in your local area will be sent with the kit. In  addition, you will be sent the name, phone number and e-mail of the local representative who can help you with any future needs such as student volunteerism, registering potential athletes, when and where you can find local sports events taking place and getting guest speakers.
