Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Special Olympics is requesting nominations for volunteer sport officials for the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, which will take place 26 February–5 March 2005. The following seven Special Olympics sports will be staged for 2,200 athletes who will travel from around the world:

  • Cross Country Skiing
  • Figure Skating

International and/or National Sport Federation Officials' certification, if issued by the sport, and/or Special Olympics officiating experience is required for all applicants for officials' assignments at the 2005 World Games.

The application form must be received by the Games Organizing Committee (GOC) no later than 12 March 2004, and must have the signature of a Special Olympics Program's National Director/Executive Director in order to be considered.
