Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Austria

(23-24 April) 7-a-side Unified tournament. (23 April) Football Picnic Day; (25-29 April) workshops with special guest coaches. (30 April) Special Olympics Unified Team Austria vs. Special Allstar Team. Special Olympics Unified Team Austria vs. Fc. Parlament (1 May) with Closing Ceremonies in the Schwarzenberger Football Park.  Cooperation with the FA.  Good local media coverage expected.

Azerbaijan

23 April-1 May

Local football tournaments in Sumgayit, Sheki, Lenkoran, Kusari-Kuba and Ganja followed by Final and coaches seminar (23 April-1 May) in Baku. Organized in cooperation with the FA and the Ministry of Youth and Sport and Tourism. Good national media coverage expected.

Local tournaments with 8 to 10 teams in all regions with biggest events in Borisov, Minsk and Bersk regions.

Bulgaria

Throughout
March/April

1) Training seminars for officials and organizers in cooperation with the FA (March); Training seminar for journalists to prepare media plan for Football Week (April). 2) 10 regional competitions (Haskovo, Plovdiv, Burgas, Stara Zagora, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven, Sofia, Ruse, Varna) (April). Winners will take part in National Games (June). 3) 50 special schools and 10 institutions will hold football demonstrations with presence of local professional players. 4) 10 mainstream schools and communities will organize local Unified tournaments. 5) Professional league teams will play wearing Special Olympics support ribbons; Special Olympics footballers to kick off matches. Bulgarian president, UN representatives, football personalities expected to attend events. Partnerships have been signed with the Bulgarian Football Union, Amateur Football League, Professional Football League and Professional Footballers Trade Union. National and regional TV coverage to cover events.

Croatia

27, 29 April

(27 April) Football will be the highlight of a new Special Olympics club OLIMP-Zapresic in which 16 teams will play and be supported by professional players and local schools. (29 April) Tournament for 16 mostly Unified teams. Guests include well-known players from the Croatian First League and Croatian Veterans League. National television to cover the event.

Cyprus

Mid-April

Special Olympics and professional players participate in Unified 11-a-side tournament in Nicosia; to be shown live on television.

Denmark

May

(May) 7-a-side tournaments for players between 13-18 years old in various locations; 500 young people to participate. Indoor tournaments for players between 7-12 years old in various locations; 300 young people to participate. Training sessions with Superliga to be organized.

France

23 April-1 May

Over 300 special schools will be asked to organize local events with up to 50 local tournaments planned throughout the country

Georgia

28-30 April

Special Olympics players from eight regions to participate in national tournament in Tbilisi. The FA, the department of education and long-time supporter, the Borjomi company, to assist in the organization of the event. Television coverage planned.

Germany

25-29 April
10-13 May

(25 April) Clinics with FC Köln, HSV Hamburg and Hanover 96. (26 April) Clinics with Eintracht Brownshwei and Fortuna Düsseldorf. (27 April) Clinics with VFL Wolfsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. FFC Frankfurt (women's football). (29 April) National football coaches seminar in Essen.(10-13 May) National football tournament in Ludwigshafen for 1,200 players.

Great Britain

23 April-1 May

London: Top London clubs Millwall, Fulham, Arsenal, Tottenham and Brentford come host one-day training session and competition. One-day 7-a-side invitational tournament Special Olympics tournament to take place at Talacre centre in Camden.
(28 April) Manchester City: Nine coaching sessions at six special schools followed by tournament .
(27 April) Everton: coaching session for Special Olympics players (adults).
(26 April) Sussex: Coaching sessions for 800 Special Olympics players.
(30 April, 1 May) Lincolnshire: Event for players under and over 16; female teams.
(end March) Northern England : First-ever Football Festival to be organized in the region.  Partnerships started with county FA, Mencap and Special Olympics.
(25-27 April) Highland: Training days at the Highland Football Academy in Dingwall and in Inverness. 
(27 April) Lothian Lothian Football Fun Day at Meadowbank Sports Stadium.

Hungary

National Football Tournament in Budapst  and "come and see Special Olympics day with pro-club " FC Ferencvaros.

Ireland

23 April-1 May

Aim of activities to promote Special Olympics football at local, regional and national levels. (30 April) Host three national league finals: 11-a-side (men), 7-a -side (women) and 5 a-side (men) culminating in gala dinner at the Great Southern Hotel in Dublin with guests from the FAI.

Israel

23 April-1 May

National basic skills football day with country-wide participation; training sessions with top league clubs.

Italy

23 April-1 May

(20 April) Press conference in Rome; (23 April) dedicated Special Olympics football day in regions; (26-29 April) male, female and Unified matches in Rome with presence of Serie A and B players who will wear Special Olympics T-shirts during key games. Special project combining SOGII and Unified Sports to make debut.

Kazakhstan

23 April-1 May

14 regional tournaments involving 1,500 SO players, including 200 Unified teams); (27-30 April) national tournament for 300 make and female youth players.  With support from former professional players.  Also training sessions with professional club Kairat.  Representatives from FA and government to attend.  500 volunteers; 200 university students as officials.

Kyrgyz Republic

23-27 April

(23-24 April) National tournament in  Bishkek. (26-27 April) Regional tournament in Tcholpon; (28-29 April) regional tournament in Oshe.

Latvia

23 April-1 May

Series of matches throughout the country, with national finals in Dzelsava. Possible Latvia-Lithuania game.

Lithuania

23 April-1 May

Series of regional tournaments with national finals in Kaunas for 10-12 male and female teams. Possible Latvia-Lithuania game.

Luxembourg

30 April

Unified tournament with teams from Luxembourg and neighboring countries; gala game with former German national players pitted against VIP team from Luxembourg. Presence in all major first and second league games, including professionals warming up wearing Special Olympics T-shirts.

Macedonia

28-29 April

Set up new 7-a-side teams, hold training sessions, organize local matches; attend amateur and professional matches during the entire football season. (28 April) National tournament.

Malta

23 April-1 May

7-a-side football tournament for 15 teams with cooperation from the FA. Training sessions with premier clubs' under 18s. Coaches clinics.

Moldova

25 April-May 1

(25 April) Meeting with FA president; (26 April) seminars for coaches, volunteers, referees; (27-29 April) regional football tournaments; (30 April-1May) national tournament in Kishiniev.

Monaco

5-a-side tournament for 21 teams.

Netherlands

20 Special Olympics games throughout the country at the start of Gouden Gids matches; some fundraising activities included.

Norway

23 April-1 May

At least 10 local tournaments throughout the country.

Poland

23 April-1 May

12-15 regional football event throughout the country with final in Warsaw, combining SOGII and Unified initiative.

Romania

23 April -1 May

(23 April): local Special Olympics tournaments in various cities for 116 teams, including 12 Unified teams and 24 women's teams.(28 April) Training session with professional players from  FC National Bucharest;  (30 April): Unified exhibition match involving sport legends and a team comprised of diplomats, businessmen and actors.

Russia

23 April-1 May

Series of local tournaments in 40 regions of Russia. (18-22 April) Final in St. Petersburg.

Serbia and Montenegro

23 April-1 May

Football events in eight regions; "Football Day" with young people from mainstream schools, part of a SOGII and Unified initiative.

Slovakia

Training camps, fun football day, tournaments, combined SOGII and Unified events; gamesprior to national league matches

Spain

Special event with FC Real Madrid and football amabassador Martine Vasquez; enhance partnership with FA  

Sweden

April-May

Exihibition games before Premier League games in Mamö, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Sundsvall , Borås and Kalmar. Indoor 5-a-side tournament for 26 teams (including 6 women's teams).

Switzerland

25 April-1 May

(25 April) March organized for Special Olympics players and UEFA staff in Nyon; (27 April) Special Olympics players and FIFA staff play in Zürich.  Competitions in Farvagny (23 April) and Burgdorf (May 1)

Tajikistan

1-7 May

(4-5 May) Regional tournaments include Unified teams, support from local government, FA; (1-2 May) national tournament in Dushanbe. Meeting with FA and football veterans, joint press conference with FA; families meeting.  Over 450 university students to volunteer, support from the ministry of education.

Turkey

23 April-1 May

1. Mini football tournaments in seven regions followed by national tournament.  Special Olympics presence at premier  league competitions, televised. Training sessions with professional players; press conference.

Turkmenistan

23-29 April

Mini football tournaments for Special Olympics players (men and women); meeting with former and current professional players.

Ukraine

23 April-3 May

European Football Week is included in the official calendar of the ministry of education, Kiev FA, regional FA federations;   20 regional tournaments in 14 regions, includes 11 female teams; regional seminars for coaches, referees, volunteers.  Special Olympics players also have opportunity to meet former professionals and youth players. 300 university students recruited as volunteers.  SOGII program activities, also Healthy Athletes FUNFitness initiative in three regions.

Uzbekistan

25 April-1 May

Special Olympics Uzbekistan and FA to sign agreement. Regional tournaments (women and men); (25 April) Unified tournament in Tashkent; training sessions with professional teams.
