Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Volunteer sport officials needed for the 2006 Special Olympics USA National Games

Special Olympics officials ensure adherence to the rules and safe competition, and are necessary to ensure the integrity of the sport
Special Olympics officials ensure adherence to the rules and safe competition, and are necessary to ensure the integrity of the sport. Officials interested in volunteering for the 2006 Special Olympics USA National Games in Ames, Iowa, are encouraged to apply to the Games Organizing Committee (GOC)  — Download applications below.

Special Olympics is requesting nominations for volunteer sport officials for the 2006 Special Olympics USA National Games in Ames, Iowa, which will take place 3 July – 8 July 2006. The following 12 Special Olympics sports will be staged for 3,500 athletes who will travel from around the United States:

  • Aquatics
  • Athletics (Track & Field)
  • Basketball
  • Bocce
  • Bowling
  • Football (Soccer)
  • Golf
  • Gymnastics
  • Powerlifting
  • Softball
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball

Specific certification and requirements per sport are listed on the applications. The application form must be received by the Games Organizing Committee (GOC) no later than 1 June 2005. The processing of application forms will begin immediately thereafter.
