Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Founding Healthy Athletes Clinical Directors Receive Accolades

The people involved in the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® initiative are dedicated individuals who oftentimes place the interests of others before their own. While their tireless work in the trenches makes Healthy Athletes a success, it also brings out the best in them and others.

Dr. Berman receives Optometrist of the Year Award
Dr. Paul Berman (left), Founder and Senior Global Clinical Advisor to Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes, received the Optometrist of the Year Award from the World Council of Optometry in Accra, Ghana.

Healthy Athletes contributors have received numerous accolades for their hard work and two more were recently honored at separate events for their contributions in their field, Dr. Paul Berman and Dr. Gil Herer.

Dr. Paul Berman, Founder and Senior Global Clinical Advisor to the Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes® program, recently was given the Optometrist of the Year award from the World Council of Optometry (WCO). Dr. Berman was presented this award in Accra, Ghana, on 6 April to honor his achievements toward WCO's mission of facilitating the enhancement and development of eye and vision care worldwide. To highlight his award, an Opening Eyes screening was conducted in conjunction with Lions Clubs of Accra and Special Olympics Ghana. 

Dr. Herer receives Humanitarian Award
Dr. Gil Herer (right), Founder and Senior Global Clinical Advisor to Healthy Hearing, received the 2005 Humanitarian Award from the American Academy of Audiology.

Dr. Gil Herer, Founder and Senior Global Clinical Advisor to the Special Olympics Healthy Hearing program, was given the Humanitarian Award from the American Academy of Audiology. Dr. Herer was presented with the award to honor his direct humanitarian contribution to society in the realm of hearing and specifically for his contribution to the hearing needs of people with intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympics is proud of its long tradition of excellence and congratulates the two most recent award winners. The health needs of people with intellectual disabilities are truly championed by all the Healthy Athletes contributors and Special Olympics is honored to have such professionals involved.
