Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

NDSS joins Special Olympics in supporting The Ringer

1 December 2005

The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) is pleased to join Special Olympics in supporting the upcoming film The Ringer. On behalf of the Down syndrome community, we thank you for championing this film and providing counsel and guidance to the cast and crew during the production process. We would also like to commend the Farrelly brothers for their commitment to increasing opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities in film by featuring more than 150 people with intellectual disabilities in small parts and supporting roles. We are inviting our constituents to view the movie and spread the word in their local communities.

NDSS is a national organization that provides programs and services in the areas of education, research and advocacy to benefit individuals with Down syndrome and their families. We are committed to raising public awareness about Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities and believe that The Ringer offers a unique opportunity for dispelling myths and providing accurate messages about this population.

NDSS and our constituents share your message that just like everyone else, individuals with intellectual disabilities are people first, each with their own interests, talents, abilities and personalities. We are thrilled that The Ringer promotes the same message in such an innovative and fun way to the youth audience.

We will continue to promote and publicly support this film for its positive contributions to our common goal of creating a world in which all people with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to realize their aspirations.

Sincerely,

Alan P. Brownstein
President
National Down Syndrome Society
