For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Special Olympics Norway signed an agreement of cooperation with the Norwegian Olympic Committee and the Confederation of Sports (NIF). The agreement will contribute to strengthening the relationship between organized sports and Special Olympics Norway while increasing participation and competition opportunities. The agreement was signed 22 May 2007 at NIF offices in Oslo.

“This is an important agreement for Norwegian sports and supports NIF's work on inclusion. Closer cooperation with Special Olympics Norway will strengthen the national work on inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities,” said Inge Andersen, NIF Secretary General.

'The new NIF leadership, and especially President Tove Paule, has been supportive of Special Olympics changes in Norway over the last year and a half. Special Olympics is looking forward to working with NIF for the benefit of Special Olympics athletes, their families and friends, and for Norwegian sports overall,” said Kai Troll, Director, Organizational Development and Strategic Marketing, Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia.
