During the Games, an Inclusive Education Forum was organized with 50 senior educational and employment authorities among the participants. The aim of the forum was to increase awareness among policy makers about inclusive education, which was introduced in Uzbekistan last year and is being implemented in a few pilot schools. One of the most important elements of the forum was the open discussion on benefits and challenges of integrating children into mainstream schools. Most agreed that a great deal more attention and information about inclusive education needs to be made available to educational authorities, schools, teachers, parents and students.
Special Olympics Special Smiles® dental screenings (a Healthy Athletes® initiative) were held during the Games and 300 athletes were screened. Fifteen volunteers from the Bukhara Medical Institute and two doctors from the local polyclinic ran the screenings.
