The Special Olympics community around the world celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. From a single competition in Chicago on 20 July 1968 to a global, year-round movement today, Special Olympics has come a long way.
The movement has given millions of people with intellectual disabilities the chance to build skills, confidence and pride through sports, and to show the world what they can achieve both on and off the playing field.
Much remains to be done, to reach more people with intellectual disabilities, and to give more volunteers, coaches, family members and supporters the chance to connect to the movement and let a Special Olympics athlete make a difference in their lives. But we should also take the time to look back over the past 40 years and remember some of the many exciting moments.
