Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

While on a business trip to Israel in June, Muhtar Kent, President and COO of the Coca-Cola Company, Special Olympics’ longest-standing corporate partner, set aside time to meet with Special Olympics Israel athletes. “There are two things most important and precious to me. One of them is Special Olympics athletes,” said Kent.

After meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Coca-Cola officials, Kent, who is also a Special Olympics International Board Member, met with Special Olympics Israel Honorary President Alex Gilady, Vice-Chair Tali Kornhouser and several athletes.

“The privilege of being associated with Special Olympics from its inception is reflected in our renewed sponsorship, which continues to represent the highest level of worldwide support possible,” said Kent. “This investment underscores our faith in Special Olympics and how it continues to grow and have impact through its message of inclusion to more people in more countries, making our world a little bit better. Together, we will continue to actively explore new opportunities that take advantage of the reach and influence of both organizations around the globe.”

In addition to being a Special Olympics Official Global Partner, the Coca-Cola Company also supported the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China. Its efforts, including cause-related marketing and a multifaceted awareness campaign in China through school and university outreach, Internet activity, outdoor advertising and retail displays, dramatically helped raise awareness of Special Olympics and active interest in the World Games throughout China.
