Special Olympics Vice Chair Nadia Comaneci and Special Olympics Romania gymnast Andra Pirvanescu star in a new Romania PSA.

On 14 April, 2008, a new public service announcement (PSA) to support Special Olympics Romania was screened at a televised gala event in Bucharest, Romania. The PSA features Olympic legend and Special Olympics Vice Chair Nadia Comaneci and Special Olympics Romania gymnast Andra Pirvanescu, 18. The event was an annual awards ceremony honoring the achievements of Romanian artists in theater, film and the circus. The audience of approximately 500 was a mix of government ministers, artists and business people.

Comaneci was joined on stage by Cristian Topescu, a well-known television sports commentator and Special Olympics Romania board member. “I want to introduce a famous lady who I had the honor of presenting on Romanian national television in 1976 when she scored the perfect 10,” said Topescu. The PSA was shown, receiving an emotional and enthusiastic burst of applause from the audience. Comaneci then spoke: “I had the opportunity to witness the first perfect 10 in Special Olympics gymnastics at the World Games in Connecticut in 1995. It was my privilege to present the award to the athlete then. I am happy to support Special Olympics is in Romania. I would like to thank those who have contributed: USAID, the American Government and the Marius Ivan Foundation.”

The gala was televised live for four hours on Romanian National Television as well as the international arm of the national broadcaster. The PSA was created by Saatchi and Saatchi in Romania and will be broadcast in the country starting in June.
