Jundiaí, 6 July – After five days of exciting competitions, the athletes at the 1st Special Olympics Pan-American Tennis tournament demonstrated their abilities and competitive talents acquired after many hours of hard training.
The final ceremony took place The night of the 6 July at the Parque da Uva Jundiaí in Brazil, with a show full of music, magic, lights, dances and, of course, the almost 3,000 spectators who applauded generously for the remarkably well done job.
At the parade the athletes were accompanied by the organizers, referees, sport leaders and members of the Special Olympics movement as a symbol of unity, courage, common goals and happiness. In the first group were the referees and delegations of Argentina, Bahamas, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica. The second group consisted of the organizers and representatives of El Salvador, Ecuador, Spain, Honduras, Mexico and Panama. In the third group were the special host of the event and image of Special Olympics Brazil Marcos Frota, the volunteers and the delegations of Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Venezuela and Brazil.
A video with the highlights of the competition made the audience once again enjoy the tournament that was about to end.
Special Olympics Latin America Regional Managing Director Dennis Brueggemann, along with athlete leaders Demetrius Marra and Nino Durler, thanked the participants for their cooperation that made this tournament a real success, as well as the volunteers for their time and commitment.
Ary Fosen, Mayor of Jundiaí, expressed on behalf of the city the pleasure of being chosen as the host of this grand event and the hospitality of its citizens.
Also, as part of the protocol of the ceremony, the Special Olympics flag was handed over to Teresa Leitao, member of the Special Olympics regional consulting board for tennis, representing the organizers of this 1st Pan-American Tennis tournament. Leitao delivered the flag to Cecilia Ancalmo, Director of COTECC (Central American and Caribbean Tennis Confederation) and Mara Garcia, Special Olympics Mexico athlete; Special Olympics Mexico will organize and host the coming 2nd tennis tournament.
An athlete representing Special Olympics Brazil and the tennis player Vanessa Menga signed the closing statement for this tournament: ”I declare the first Special Olympics Pan-American Tennis tournament closed and I wish a safe and happy journey back home to all the athletes and members of the delegations. Moito Obrigado!!”
