Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

First Special Olympics Youth and School Initiatives Seminar Held in Latin America

From 19-20 February in Panama City, Panama, the first Special Olympics Youth and School Initiatives Seminar in Latin America was held with the participation of coordinators from Peru, Paraguay, Chile, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama and Puerto Rico.
 
The seminar sessions focused on the current use of the Special Olympics Get Into It (SO Get Into It) curriculum and the launch of the initiative's second phase to elementary, secondary and higher education schools in eight countries in the region. Strategies on how to maximize contacts to young people and their teachers were also discussed.
 
Patricia Behrmann, Special Olympics Latin America's Regional Youth and Schools Coordinator, Paulina Baudet, Special Olympics Latin America's Innovations Manager and Ron Vederman, Ed.D., Special Olympics Director of School and Youth Outreach, facilitated the discussions.
