Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Safeway Celebrates 20 Years

Special Olympics Inc. is pleased to announce a new fundraising and awareness campaign with Safeway. Safeway is expanding upon its historic commitment to serving people with disabilities by inviting Special Olympics to participate in an annual promotion. From March 30 - April 30, 2008, Safeway shoppers will be asked at checkout if they would like to donate US$1 or more to support people with disabilities and Special Olympics will receive a portion of funds raised from this promotion. The campaign takes place in all 21 U.S. states in which Safeway does business including: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. Additionally, Special Olympics programs will engage with their local Safeway stores through employee volunteerism and involvement with Special Olympics activities and athletes.
