Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Employee Fundraising Opportunities

There are many ways your employees can support Special Olympics. Each Special Olympics Program offers its own array of fundraising opportunities. Following are some sample activities.

  • Take part in one of the many fundraising events held by local Special Olympics Programs. One highly successful example is the Polar Plunges, a very popular special event among Law Enforcement Torch Run® volunteers across the country. Approximately 24 Polar Plunges take place every year in 15 U.S. states, helping to raise millions of dollars for Special Olympics Programs.
  • Conduct fundraising campaigns on your company grounds.
  • Create a fundraising event, such as celebrity gala or auction, using your company's resources.
  • Host events for athletes and their families. For example, hold a Special Olympics Night at the Movies.
  • Make financial or in-kind donations as individuals or through your company.
  • Conduct a golf tournament to benefit Special Olympics.
  • Name Special Olympics as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, will or employee payroll deduction plan.
