Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

International Torch Run Conference

The 2006 International Torch Run Conference was held in Buffalo, New York (USA), from 8-11 November. At the annual conference, law enforcement officers and Special Olympics staff members from around the world celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. The celebration was especially gratifying when it was announced that the Torch Run had raised a record US$25.5 million in its 25th year, a true testimonial to the dedication and spirit of the law enforcement community for Special Olympics.

Every year, the International Conference provides an opportunity for Torch Run volunteers to network, share and learn how to improve their local Torch Run programs, which contribute greatly to increasing public awareness and enhancing the lives of Special Olympics athletes throughout the world. The 2007 conference will be held 31 October - 3 November in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA.

At the 2006 Torch Run Conference in Buffalo, New York (USA), participants celebrated the Torch Run's 25th anniversary and a record-breaking fundraising year. In its 25th year, the Torch Run raised US$25.5 million for Special Olympics worldwide.

Also at the conference, Torch Run Founder Richard LaMunyon received a President's Volunteer Service Award, and members of the Torch Run community received the John Carion Memorial “Unsung Hero” Award and the Hall of Fame Awards. In addition, programs were recognized for their fundraising efforts.
