Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Krispy Kreme and the Law Enforcement Torch Run partner to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics

Law enforcement officers will take to the roofs of local Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc., stores to raise money for Special Olympics during the first weekend of May 2008. From 6 a.m. on Friday, 2 May, to 6 p.m. on Sunday, 4 May, officers will collect donations from customers as they eat, sleep and play on the rooftops of Krispy Kreme stores.

During “Cops on Doughnut Shops” weekend, police officers will collect donations from customers and the general public as they are perched on the rooftops of Krispy Kreme stores. 2008 will mark the second national effort by the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Krispy Kreme. In 2007, more than US$257,000 was raised through "Cops on Doughnut Shops" events.

In addition to collecting donations from customers, officers also will make calls to local individuals and business leaders asking for pledges. Many events find local community officials, sports figures and media personalities challenged to join the law enforcement personnel on the roof to contribute to the fundraising efforts, and Special Olympic Athletes are usually on hand to help greet customers and create awareness of the Special Olympics programs in the area.

Customers who donate US$5 or more to the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will receive not only the sincere thanks of participating officers, but will also receive treats from Krispy Kreme ranging from a free doughnut to a free dozen Original Glazed doughnuts. Corporations, organizations or individuals donating US$1,000 or more will receive a free Krispy Kreme doughnut party for their employees.
