Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Global Partner of the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games and 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games

Global Supporter of Special Olympics International

In 2007, DHL and Special Olympics formed a partnership that has enabled the Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics to travel for the first time ever to cities all over the world en route to the World Games.

With DHL as a Global Partner of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, it became possible in 2007 to transport the “Flame of Hope™ ” from its traditional lighting location in Athens through key international cities worldwide, bringing it to five continents before its final stop at the Opening Ceremonies of the World Summer Games in Shanghai, China. This marks an exciting milestone for Special Olympics, because previously the “Flame of Hope” was transported from Athens directly to the World Games venue. DHL will similarly serve as a Global Partner of the Law Enforcement Torch Run leading up to the 2009 World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho (USA).

DHL will provide cash and in-kind services for the Torch Runs in 2007 and 2009, and it will also ship all Law Enforcement Torch Run uniforms and Opening Ceremonies equipment to the World Games. The partnership designates DHL as a Global Supporter of Special Olympics International.

“DHL's sponsorship endorses Special Olympics as the catalyst for social change by promoting equal opportunities and supporting diversity, which are part of our corporate values,” said Dan McHugh, acting CEO, DHL Express Asia Pacific. “We hope to reinforce the spirit of determination, mental endurance and physical stamina among individuals, including our staff. Just as Special Olympics athletes triumph over all obstacles to compete on this world stage, DHL is committed to overcome logistics challenges to move the 'Flame of Hope' around the globe, sharing the vision of hope with Special Olympics athletes.”

Special Olympics Chairman Timothy Shriver also hailed the partnership, saying, “The journey of the 'Flame of Hope' around the world is symbolic of our mission not only to give new hope to Special Olympics athletes and their families, but also to break down barriers and create awareness for social change around the world. We are pleased to be partnering with DHL to help us honor our athletes for their tremendous courage and commitment-on the field of play and in every aspect of their lives.”
